The Nicholls State University Colonels featured a solid running game on their way to a 38-17 Southland Conference victory over Houston Baptist Huskies Saturday afternoon October 17, 2015 on Manning Field, John L. Guidry Stadium ending what was the longest-active losing streak in Division I football and was the Colonels first victory for since October. 12, 2013. The win came before a jubilant crowd for Family Day 2015.
The Colonels (1-5 overall, 1-3 SLC) finished the game with 291 rushing yards. The Colonels set the tone early with three first-quarter rushing touchdowns. Running back Michael Henry carried 23 times for 92 yards and 2 TD’s. His first of two on a 1-yard run and his second touchdown came as time expired in the first quarter.
Houston Baptist (2-5 overall, 0-4 SLC) had a 1-yard run from B. J. Kelly with 11:12 on the clock in the second quarter and Travis Shinn made a 43-yard field goal to end the first half bringing the score to a 21-10 halftime lead by the Colonels.
The Colonels continued to pound the ground throughout the second half with running back Tobias Lofton who carried for 69 yards and 1 TD. Nicholls totaled 425 total yards, 25 first downs.
The fourth quarter domination continued by the Colonels on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Tuskani Figaro passed for 134 yards and rushed for 91 yards with 2 TD’s and scored on a 14-yard run. Francisco Condado made a 31-yard field goal with 6:29 remaining for a 38-10 lead.
The Colonels defense did their job holding Houston Baptist (221 total yards) to 30 rushing yards on 20 attempts while forcing three turnovers.
With 1:48 remaining in the game a rainbow began to appear in western sky and first year Coach Tim Rebowe was given not one, but two Power Aid showers as he earned his first win as a collegiate head football coach. Hopefully this was a sign of more wins ahead.
